This raises the question whether the effect observed is due to hemolysin production by S. bovis or whether the blood cells are perhaps altered by CO2 in such a way as to render them susceptible to some other chemical reaction of the bacteria. For this reason the authors have refrained from ascribing this effect to a hemolysin, although this would seem to be a distinct possibility.
